Florida Detention Sergeant Dies After Jail Scuffle

A Polk County detention sergeant passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8 after breaking his back in a jail altercation.

Sgt. Ronnie O'Neal Brown, 48, was responding to an unruly prisoner's cell Sunday, Aug. 30 when inmate Terrence Barnett became increasingly violent and broke the sprinkler head in his cell, according to a sheriff's office press release.

Brown was rescued from the cell by fellow deputies after being shoved into the wall and onto the floor by the inmate. He was taken by ambulance to Lake Wales Hospital to be treated for his injuries, and released.

However, the injuries to his back became so severe that he could not move, and he underwent back surgery at Winter Haven Hospital Wednesday, Sept. 2. He remained there after the surgery and died in his hospital bed Monday, Sept. 8.

Brown was a 20-year-veteran of the Sheriff's Office with honors including a Meritorious Service Medal for providing CPR to an unresponsive inmate. He is survived by his wife Tina, a detention deputy in Bartow, and their teen-aged daughter.

The sheriff's office has launched a homicide investigation into his death.

"Sgt. Brown was a dedicated man who was respected by his supervisors and admired by his peers," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "Our prayers are with Ronnie's wife and family."

BY CHRIS HAVENS and LORA PABST

A North St. Paul police officer was shot and killed and another officer was injured this morning after responding to a domestic call in an apartment complex. The suspect was also killed, authorities said.

Police received a call about a violation of a restraining order at the Aspen Village apartment complex at 2253 Skillman Av. E. around 8:30 a.m. The North St. Paul officer and a female Maplewood police officer responded to the apartment unit on the first floor, according to Maplewood Deputy Chief Dave Kvam.

Shots were fired and the suspect and the North St. Paul officer were both killed.

The Maplewood police officer was shot in the arm and taken to Regions Hospital. She is expected to recover. The suspect's wife or girlfriend is being questioned. Police are not searching for any other suspects.

Police did not immediately identify the officers or the assailant. The North St. Paul police department is made up of between 15 and 20 officers.

Resident Artis Kern said police weren't allowing residents to leave the building." "Officers everywhere," is how she described the scene. "It's not an unusual sight, but still it rattles you when you see it."

Kern said she didn't hear shots because she had her air-conditioning running. Several of the units in Aspen Village are empty, she said, because of recent foreclosure problems. A new owner since took over Aspen Village, she said.

Two police officers were shot, one fatally, Tuesday night in a small town in southern Delaware, authorities said.

Officer Chad Spicer of the Georgetown Police Department died several hours after he was wounded, The News Journal of Wilmington reported. Spicer and a colleague were shot at about 7:30 p.m. after they responded to a call of shots fired at a McDonald's.

Cpl. Bruce Harris of the Delaware State Police said the two officers followed a car from the McDonald's and then began a foot chase when the occupants of the car left it.

Officer Shawn Brittingham was taken to Beebe Hospital, the Sussex Countian reported.

Police took two suspects into custody and were searching for a third. A five-block area was sealed off late Tuesday.

Georgetown, the county seat of Sussex County, is a town of fewer than 5,000 people in rural southern Delaware.

By ANDREW J. NELSON
Omaha World-Herald, Neb.

A Platte County sheriff's deputy was killed this morning in a crash just north of Cornlea, Neb.

Deputy Christopher Johnson, 34, of Columbus, was enroute to a reported crash with injuries. He was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala patrol car on Nebraska 91 when the fatal accident occurred.

The Nebraska State Patrol said a westbound 2000 Freightliner semi tractor trailer turning left onto the Cornlea spur struck Johnson's car, which was eastbound.

The deputy died at the scene.

The Freightliner's driver, Gene Schlake, 60, of Beatrice, was taken to a Columbus hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the State Patrol said.

Johnson had been a Platte County sheriff's deputy since 2006.

By PATRICK WILSON
The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA.)

A deputy sheriff in Southampton County died in a car crash early Saturday when he and another officer were on the way to a call.

Christopher Ray, 22, the passenger in the car, was killed on General Thomas Highway near Handsom Road outside Franklin, the sheriff's office said. The deputies' car hit a tree that had fallen across the roadway.

The sheriff's office said the driver was Jason Brinkley, a deputy who was treated and released from a hospital.

Ray joined the sheriff's office on June 1 after graduating from Radford University with a degree in criminal justice.

Weymouth Police Department

Officer Michael Davey

Story by thebostonchannel.com

BOSTON --

A Weymouth police officer working a detail was killed Monday after being struck by a pickup truck.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that Ronald Gale, 79, pinned the officer between his Mazda pickup truck and a utility truck at the intersection of West Street and Route 18 in Weymouth at about 10 a.m. Monday.

Officials identified the police officer as Michael Davey, 34. Weymouth Police Chief Tim Carr described Davey as a hometown boy who "always wanted to be a police officer."

Through tears, Carr said Davey returned to his family five years ago from serving in Iraq, and he immediately signed up with Weymouth police, walking in his father's footsteps.

"We will miss him," Carr said.

"Today is a profoundly sad day first and foremost for the spouse of Michael Davey, for his three children, for his father and mother and two brothers and his extended family," Norfolk County District Attorney William Keating said.

The district attorney described Davey as "a person who served his country and his law enforcement community," adding, "Those people are not commonplace. He will be missed."

Gale told NewsCenter 5 that he first hit a Toyota Camry, and that crash sent his truck into the police officer and a National Grid utility truck. Police said Gale drove through a stop sign.

Gale, of Weymouth, was cited for motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, failure to stop at a stop sign, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and speeding, Keating said. The Registry of Motor Vehicles revoked Gale's license.

According to witnesses, Gale seemed unable to react after the crash, and a National Grid worker had to release the accelerator and put the truck in reverse. But Gale told NewsCenter 5 that he backed up the truck after the crash.

"I have no idea whether it knocked (the Camry) into the police officer or what happened at that point," Gale said.

"All our guys are trained in first aid and CPR and they tried to help. But I was informed when I got here that the scene didn't look very good right from the get go. It was a very, very bad collision. Very, very bad," said National Grid Safety Officer Ted Wheeler.

The officer was taken to South Shore Hospital where he died.

"I am nervous as hell. Let's put it that way. I'm shaking, because since I was 16 years old, I've never had an accident," Gale said.

Gale told NewsCenter 5 that he was praying for the officer's family. Fresh flowers adorned West and Front streets as the foundation for a growing memorial to Davey.

Gale did not have any other offenses on his driving record before Monday's crash.

TAMPA, Fla. --

A Tampa police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Wednesday night.

Authorities said they've arrested Humberto Delgado Jr., 34, and believe he was responsible for the shooting.

Cpl. Mike Roberts, 38, was killed around 10 p.m. while responding to a call north of downtown Tampa. Witnesses said the officer became involved in a violent struggle with the assailant, who hit the officer several times with a pistol and then shot him once.

Assistant Police Chief Jane Castor said Roberts was wearing body armor, but the bullet went through his arm and into his chest. Investigators said Delgado fled the scene, but officers were able to track him down and arrest him. He was reportedly found carrying a backpack containing several firearms.

Roberts was married and had a 3-year-old son.

Washington Deputy Dies After Hitting Elk

Posted: Wednesday, August 19, 2009
Updated: August 19th, 2009 05:09 PM EDT

The Chronicle, Centralia, Wash.

A Lewis County sheriff's deputy died Tuesday night of injuries sustained almost exactly 24 hours earlier when his patrol cruiser hit an elk in Packwood.

Deputy Stephen "Mike" Gallagher, Adna, died at 8:05 p.m. He was 34.

Gallagher had been rushed by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the crash at 8:23 p.m. Monday. He was on his way to back up another officer for a domestic violence call when he hit the elk near mile post 130 on U.S. Highway 12.

The deputy had worked for the sheriff's office for six years. He started work in the Lewis County Jail in July 2003. He was hired as a deputy sheriff in September 2007 and graduated from law enforcement academy in January 2008.

Gallagher was also an Army veteran. He served eight years in the military, including in Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti and Operation Joint Guardian in Kosovo as a staff sergeant and squad leader.

He was married and leaves behind two young children.

For several years a controversy has been boiling over whether a heightened number of elk in East Lewis County should prompt an increased hunt. Estimates of the number of elk vary, and the state recommended an increase in hunting early this year after numerous complaints from neighbors, some in Packwood.

That proposal met opposition from the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, but the general consensus between the two is that elk at the East End are growing less shy around roads and homes.

The last sheriff's office employee to die while on duty was Deputy Richard Alfred Snider, who had a heart attack while on duty at the jail in February 1986. Before that, Deputy Ernest Runke died after an assault in September 1957. Two other line-of-duty deaths are listed in records from 1937 and 1919.

Puerto Rico Police Officer Killed by Inmate

Posted: Monday, August 17, 2009

Puerto Rico Police Department

Officer Jorge Sanchez Santiago

By LAURA N. PEREZ SANCHEZ
Associated Press Writer

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico --

A 23-year-old prisoner being taken to jail to face car theft charges allegedly shot one police officer to death and gravely wounded a second, then escaped in their squad car, authorities said Sunday.

Dozens of police and FBI agents mounted a manhunt across Puerto Rico for the suspect, Ricardo Lebron Berrios, who allegedly opened fire while he was being driven to a Bayamon jail late Saturday.

A Justice Department statement said Officer Jorge Sanchez Santiago was killed and Lt. Benjamin Santiago Fragoso was in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

Early Sunday, police issued a brief, confused statement indicating an unknown gunman had ambushed the squad car along the highway as the two officers drove a prisoner from the eastern city of Humacao to a lockup outside San Juan.

But Justice Secretary Antonio Sagardia later told reporters a further review showed "there were no other people involved nor vehicles, eliminating the theory that the incident was an ambush."

Authorities would not say if they believed Lebron managed to wrestle a gun away from one of the officers. Sagardia only said that forensic tests indicated 9-mm bullet casings at the shooting scene matched the officers' service weapons.

After the shooting, the gunman apparently fled in the police car, leaving the officers lying on the roadside. The car was found abandoned early Sunday in the east coast town of Juncos.

Police said they planned to offer a reward for information leading to Lebron's capture. They did not specify an amount.

The killing boosted the number of homicides so far this year to 544 in the U.S. Caribbean territory, 28 more than during the same period of 2008.

Colorado Officer Killed in Shooting

Story by thedenverchannel.com

DENVER --

A witness said he heard about 12 shots in five seconds during a shooting in Montrose late Saturday night that killed a police officer and injured two others.

Sheriff's deputies and police were called to a domestic dispute at 16915 64.50 Road around 8:30 p.m., said police Chief Tom Chinn.

Police started talking to the person who reported the incident. That's when a man who barricaded himself in a garage behind the home started shooting at police, Chinn said in a news release.

Officers Larry Witte and Rodney Ragsdale were injured and taken to Montrose Memorial Hospital. Sgt. David Kinterknecht, a 10-year veteran, was hit and killed, Chinn said.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported an officer could be heard on a police scanner desperately calling for backup and saying three people "were down."

Witte and Ragsdale were hospitalized after being shot in the legs. Chinn said both had surgery and were doing well.

The suspect was killed at the scene; Chinn said it had not yet been determined whether the man shot himself or was killed by police and sheriff's deputies.

Police have not released the man's name.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.

The shooting happened near the Cobble Creek Golf Course in a relatively affluent area of Montrose.

Montrose is about 260 miles from Denver in western Colorado.

Two Oklahoma Deputies Fatally Shot
Funeral information below

Posted: Monday, July 27, 2009
Updated: July 29th, 2009 11:21 AM EDT

By SEAN MURPHY
Associated Press Writer

WEWOKA, Okla. --

A man accused of killing two deputies who were trying to arrest him grinned and chuckled to himself as he appeared in court Monday and learned prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty.

Ezekiel Gilbert Ray Holbert, 26, of Seminole, was charged in Seminole County District Court with two counts of first-degree murder in the shootings Sunday of sheriff's deputies Robbie Chase Whitebird, 23, and Marvin Williams, 43. A judge ordered Holbert held without bond.

With his hands and ankles shackled, Holbert appeared to wince as a deputy helped him to his feet to answer the judge's questions. One of his eyes was blackened and swollen. Armed deputies escorted Holbert into the courtroom and stood behind him during the brief hearing.

No attorney appeared with Holbert, and District Attorney Chris Ross said he had not yet requested a court-appointed lawyer.

Holbert also faces three counts of shooting with intent to kill. Ross alleges that Holbert fired shots at two other officers and a woman who lives across the street.

The woman, 22-year-old Jenifer Bowen, had just returned from a walk with her two children when a bullet hit her arm and entered her chest, said her mother-in-law, Janet Bowen. She was in serious condition, according to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Whitebird and Williams were trying to arrest Holbert for failing to make a court appearance after he was released on bond in a domestic violence case in February. In that case, his mother said he tried to strangle her after he was inhaling paint thinner, court records show. According to an affidavit, "Ms. Holbert and her kids are in fear of Ezekiel's explosive behavior."

As the deputies entered the home, Holbert fired several shots, according to an affidavit filed by Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent Adam Whitney.

"They both were hit within moments of the door opening," said OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown. "I don't know if they even had the opportunity to return fire."

One deputy died at the scene and the second died on the way to the hospital, Brown said.

Ross said Whitebird died inside the house. Williams was dragged from the front porch and died on the way to a hospital.

"I came outside and they were treating one of the officers that was down here at the corner," said William Allison, who lives in the neighborhood where the shooting took place.

Whitney wrote that Holbert told officers he shot at the "enforcement" as they were in his mother's house, using a 9 mm Kel-Tec rifle.

Ross also filed a bill of particulars Monday, indicating that prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty. That document indicates that Holbert has 2002 convictions out of Dallas County, Texas, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault causing bodily injury.

Ross said Holbert also has a "history of involuntary commitments" for psychiatric problems.

Holbert's sister, Tamara Rodriguez, filed for a protective order against him in June 2007, claiming he threatened to kill her husband and her children.

"I'm so scared for my family that he is going to kill someone," Rodriguez wrote in the petition. "He has three guns in the house that he brags about that he is going to shoot my husband with."

The order was dismissed in July 2008 at Rodriguez's request. She said she had moved to Texas and had not had any problems with her brother for almost a year.

Holbert previously was convicted of a misdemeanor count of outraging public decency in Oklahoma County and was the defendant in a case in which a man sought a protective order.

Hi,
for the fourth year, we are having the Ralph Alongi Memorial Poker Run for Hospice, Inc. and would like to know if we can add the information and/or a link to our website on you calendar. The date of the event in October 4, 2009. All the proceeds from the event go to Hospice, Inc. of Ulster and Dutchess Counties. I wasn't sure how to go about this, and any help you could provide to us for this year would be much appreciated. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me @hospicepokerrun@msn.com. Thanks in advance for your support!

Hi! Your Link and poker run is listed on our page!

Our primary goals in becoming a Public Safety motorcycle club are to develop a bond between Law Enforcement Officers,Correction Officers, Firefighters and Officers of the court, to assist Officers and Firefighters in their time of need and to assist the orphans and widows of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
(WE SUPPORT ANYTHING THAT IS FOR A GOOD CAUSE) ;D
We are a non-profit organization that supports “ALL” Public Safety and Military Motorcycle Clubs and will respect the colors they wear. We are not affiliated with Harley Davidson nor any other motorcycle company. However, in support of American made motorcycles, we require our members to own and operate a V-twin motorcycle manufactured by a North American Owned Company.
